Turn
of the century style and grace are captured in the recent renovation of one of Buffalo's
historic main street homes into office space for RE/MAX Mountain West, REALTORS®.
As the dusty cow town of the 19th century evolved into a thriving community of trade and
commerce, Buffalo's Main Street became the town's premier residential neighborhood. Here
early community leaders lined the streets with trees and built homes to impress both their
neighbors and travelers alike. Over the protests of many Buffalo residents, the state
highway department removed many of the old cottonwoods on Main Street in the 1960's in
order to widen State Highway 16 into a four lane road. Nevertheless, many of the
trees still remain and more have been planted to reclaim the atmosphere that makes Buffalo
an inviting oasis.
Today, most of the
original homes on Buffalo's main street still stand. Most are beautifully maintained
and are being used as private residences. According to county records, the home which now
houses RE/MAX Mountain West, REALTORS ®, was build in 1889. The
structure was added on to several times prior to 1920 with the resulting style being
primarily Mission with elements of the Victorian era. The home was in an extremely
dilapidated state when purchased in 1998 and required extensive structural and cosmetic
reconstruction.
Every effort has been
made to salvage the integrity of the this house, from the large, curving front porch to
the the rustic, yet beautiful, interior woodwork. While several features were added to
accommodate the disabled, the floor plan remains essentially the same. The oak floors
relect the warmth of the river rock fireplace, and the high ceilings evoke a sense of
spacious grandeur.
It has been the
greatest of pleasures to realize the appreciation that the people of Buffalo have shown
for this renovation project. It seems the old house was a favorite of many who were
saddened by its long decline into ruin and decay. Scores of local people have toured the
home since the renovation and members of several prominent families who once owned the
house have shared both their memories and their joy over what has been accomplished.
