The Clear Creek Trail System provides beautiful hiking or bicycling opportunities through Buffalo and into the Bighorn Mountains.
Buffalo also has an attractive and historic downtown shopping area and fine restaurants are available. The Jim Gatchell Museum of the Old West contains exhibits of the rich history of the region.
The magnificent Bighorn Mountains and the Bighorn national Forest are just a few minutes from the center of Buffalo. Popular activities in the Bighorns include camping, hiking & backpacking, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing, sightseeing and photography.
Many wildlife species are very abundant in the Bighorns region. Elk, Moose, Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, Pronghorn Antelope, Bald Eagles, and countless other small animals inhabit this beautiful region.

Recreation in Buffalo and Johnson County, Wyoming
There is much to see and do year round in the Buffalo and Johnson County area. Popular entertainment includes golfing, mountain horseback riding, hiking and backpacking, swimming, fishing, hunting, rodeo and fairground events, history and museum tours and just plain sightseeing.
Historic downtown Buffalo, Wyoming has many shops and historic buildings, including the Occidental Hotel where Owen Wister's Virginian "got his man". Buffalo also has a hospital, veterinary clinic, veterinary hospital, senior center, police and sheriff's office, bowling alley, and many other community services.
The Jim Gatchell Museum is a regional Western History Museum dedicated to preserving the integrity of the American West, in particular, the Powder River-Bozeman Trail region. Group museum tours are available.
The 18 hole-71 par Buffalo Golf Course, which has been featured in Golf Magazine, has beautiful views of the Bighorn Mountains, a Pro Shop, cart rental, club rental, driving range and a restaurant.
The Buffalo City Swimming Pool may be the largest outdoor pool you've ever seen and it is completely FREE! It is open during the summer and is completely staffed with lifeguards. It has nice grassy areas for picnicking or sunbathing and a snack stand.
There are many events sheduled at the Johnson County Fairgrounds each year, providing enjoyment for people of all ages. The annual Johnson County Fair & Rodeo and parade is held early in August of each year. For a schedule of local events, see the calendar of events on the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce web site. The town of Kaycee, just over 40 miles south of Buffalo, is host to the Deke Latham Memorial PRCA Rodeo and many other events during the year.
The Johnson County YMCA is a complete athletic facility with an indoor swimming pool and hot tub, racquetball courts, basketball courts, weight lifting, gymnasium and workout room and outdoor tennis courts. There is also an outdoor ice skating rink nearby for winter skating.
The Clear Creek walking and bicycling trail originates in Buffalo and extends about 10 miles into the Bighorn Mountains. You can access different segments of the trail from the road system to walk or bicycle on different parts of the trail. The trail follows Clear Creek fork of the Powder River, which is also very popular for trout fishing. Clear Creek flows under Main Street in Buffalo.
The Big Horn Mountains and Bighorn National Forest are a recreational paradise filled with exciting things to do and see. Buffalo, Wyoming lies at the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains, so a few minutes drive on U.S. Highway 16 (Cloud Peak Scenic Byway) is all it takes to enjoy magnificent views of the peaks. Cloud Peak, the highest peak of the Bighorn Mountains, reaches 13,175 feet above sea level. There are several mountain lodges and resorts that offer horseback riding, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, skiing and dining. Camping, hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing are also popular outdoor activities in the Bighorns.
Wildlife viewing is also very popular in the Buffalo, Wyoming and Big Horn Mountains region. We have Pronghorn Antelope, Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, Elk, Moose and a variety of small game animals. Deer, antelope, wild turkeys and other wildlife species are often seen within the town of Buffalo.

Activites for Children
Buffalo has many facilities, activities and events for children and young adults. The Big Horn Mountains are just a few minutes away where families can enjoy camping, hiking and backpacking, fishing, horseback riding, and other enjoyable activities.

Ice skaters can enjoy ice skating at the outdoor winter skating rink in Buffalo. There is also a skateboard park and a playground for children.
The Buffalo YMCA offers recreational facilities and programs for both children and adults. The facility has a swimming pool, sauna, weight equipment room, racquetball courts, gymnasium and outdoor tennis courts.
Many training and exercise programs are offered for people of all ages.
The Clear Creek Hiking Trail begins in Buffalo and runs approximately 10 miles into the Big Horn Mountains. Clear Creek itself flows right under Main Street in Buffalo and is an excellent trout fishing stream.
Buffalo is also the home of the Johnson County Fair and Rodeo grounds which hosts many activities throughout the spring and summer for people of all ages.

Buffalo's Clear Creek Middle School
Johnson County School District Number One is a consolidated district with attendance centers at Buffalo and Kaycee. Approximately 1,270 students attend Johnson County Schools.
Buffalo has two elementary schools, consisting of grades K-5. The middle school houses grades 6-8, and the high school enrolls grades 9-12. A variety of educational programs, supportive services, and extracurricular activities are offered in the schools commensurate with other schools in Wyoming.
Kaycee is a small ranching community located 45 miles south of Buffalo. One elementary school houses grades K-6 and the high school encompasses grades 7-12. Kaycee high school has been involved for several years in long distance satellite learning, thus creating opportunities for an expanded curriculum. Teacher housing is made available in Kaycee at a nominal rental price.
Johnson County schools are deeply dedicated to offering the best educational opportunities to children. Professional educators with a strong commitment to their profession who possess exemplary capabilities are found in each community.
Johnson County School District Number One is one of the leaders in education in Wyoming. The district is committed to the School-University Partnership, technology, a strong curriculum, and staff development.
The district is proud of the scholastic accomplishments of its students. Students consistently score above their Standard Grade Equivalent on achievement tests and above the national norm on ACT tests.
Student success is enhanced through participation in school activities. Johnson County School District Number One provides a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including music, drama, sports, forensics, FFA, and student government.
The district's budget is approximately $9.3 million. Johnson County's local assessed valuation is $80 million.
